About the event
In alignment with the upcoming International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 🚺, the UNICEF Student Team Amsterdam and European Horizons Amsterdam are proud to present the event “Violence against Women during Migration”. 🌍 Violent conflict disproportionally impacts women and girls, as these are the first to lose their rights to education 📚, to political participation 🗣️ and to livelihoods, among other rights being violated ❗. Crises exacerbate gender inequalities and further intensify gender-based violence. The goal of this event is therefore to raise awareness on gender-based violence in the context of migration and asylum. To this end, we are honoured to have two distinguished guest speakers who will contribute with their invaluable insights on this issue: Joella Bravo Mougán has a legal background in international human rights law and conflict studies ⚖️. As an attorney, she has specialized in immigration law, refugee law and assistance to victims of human trafficking and has over 10 years of experience in conducting legal proceedings before national and international courts and committees. Joella regularly offers training to organizations working in the field of assistance of victims of human trafficking. She strongly believes that the law should be used to empower the position of vulnerable people and victims. Patricia Silva Barendregt is the executive director of Road to Hope 🔆, an organisation committed to guaranteeing the protection of the human rights of refugees and asylum seekers and facilitating their holistic integration into Dutch society . Policy advisor and liason officer in the Iraqi Embassy in Brazil, she worked as a researcher in the Al-Mafraq, Irbid, Al-Zarqa, Amman and Al-Za’atari refugee camps. It is her belief that the empowerment of refugee women strengthens their position, transforming their reality from a vulnerable situation to a situation of stability, playing an important role in the integration of everyone around them.
